Siem Reap

Cambodia’s Siem Reap is one of those destinations on any student backpacker's to-do-list. And if it’s not on yours (it totally should be), it’s most probably on your friend’s list. Siem Reap offers something for just about every traveler: historical temple ruins, rich and fascinating history, delicious street food, electric nightlife, quirky restaurants and bars, beautiful boutique hotels, and memorable cultural experiences. A stone's throw away from the magnificent region of Angkor, the city is best known as being the home of the largest temple complex in the world.

The Angkor Wat

When you think of important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, one place immediately comes to mind – Angkor Wat. It’s part of a temple complex that attracts over 2 million tourists to Siem Reap every year.

The sprawling temple complex is an architectural feat and home to a number of impressive religious structures and monuments. Angkor Wat is the largest Hindu temple and one of the most impressive archaeological treasures in the world, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Food Scene

There is a great food scene in Siem Reap. One moment you could find yourself eating at a pricey Cambodian fusion restaurant, the next you’re eating off plastic plates in the street having paid 50p for your entire meal. If you’re unsure on where to get the best food experience whilst in the city, there are a range of food tours to take part in whilst in Siem Reap. Savour noodle dishes, fresh seafood, exotic Cambodian fruits and tempting sweets whilst exploring markets, rice paddies and street-food stands.

Your remote Islands

While the masses flock to the neighboring islands of Thailand, Cambodia’s alternatives are often overlooked by tourists.

Koh Rong holds the crown as the party island, with nearby Koh Rong Samloem boasting pristine powdery sands flanked by tropical flora. Other remote gems include Koh Thmei, Koh Ta Kiev, and Koh Totang.

Until not long ago, Koh Rong was just an almost virgin island, covered with jungle-fringed by white sands and turquoise waters. However, today, it has become one of the most popular destinations for backpackers to enjoy a few days in paradise.

If you’re feeling a little templed out, there is much more to explore in and around the city. Hop on the back of a Vespa and weave through the streets with a local as they reveal some of the top local foodie spots like markets, bars and restaurants. Head out to the countryside and walk, cycle or even ride a quad bike through the backroads, passing villages, paddy fields and taking in a more peaceful side to the city. The land here is especially lovely and verdant just after the rainy season in October and November.
