The Angkor Wat When you think of important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, one place immediately comes to mind – Angkor Wat. The Food Scene There is a great food scene in Siem Reap. One moment you could find yourself eating at a pricey Cambodian fusion restaurant, the next you’re eating off plastic plates in the street having paid 50p for your entire meal. Your remote Islands While the masses flock to the neighboring islands of Thailand, Cambodia’s alternatives are often overlooked by tourists. Koh Rong holds the crown as the party island, with nearby Koh Rong Samloem boasting pristine powdery sands flanked by tropical flora. Other remote gems include Koh Thmei, Koh Ta Kiev, and Koh Totang. Until not long ago, Koh Rong was just an almost virgin island, covered with jungle-fringed by white sands and turquoise waters. However, today, it has become one of the most popular destinations for backpackers to enjoy a few days in paradise. |
If you’re feeling a little templed out, there is much more to explore in and around the city. Hop on the back of a Vespa and weave through the streets with a local as they reveal some of the top local foodie spots like markets, bars and restaurants. Head out to the countryside and walk, cycle or even ride a quad bike through the backroads, passing villages, paddy fields and taking in a more peaceful side to the city. The land here is especially lovely and verdant just after the rainy season in October and November.
